Esalen Hot Springs
Perched on a dramatic stretch of the Big Sur coastline, Esalen Hot Springs offers a rare combination: natural mineral pools, ocean views, and a clothing-optional policy. The springs are located on the grounds of the Esalen Institute, a private retreat center, so access is controlled and reservations are required.
The atmosphere is quiet and contemplative. Visitors may choose to wear a swimsuit or nothing at all—both are common, and the prevailing etiquette is one of mutual respect and non-intrusion. Photography is not permitted in the bath area, and conversation tends to be hushed, befitting a space intended for relaxation and reflection.
Because the site is privately owned, public access is limited to late-night hours (1:00 am – 3:00 am) for those not enrolled in workshops or overnight stays. Reservations are released same-day and fill quickly. First-time visitors should plan ahead and expect a serene, low-key environment where nudity is present but never the focus.
Public Bathing Hours
The hot springs are open to the general public nightly from 1:00 am to 3:00 am. That two-hour window is the only time non-guests can get in.
Reservations
Same-day reservations are required. Registration opens at 9:00 am PST each morning for that night’s session. Slots go fast—call right at 9:00. The cost is about $35 per person.
Highway 1 Access (Important)
Because of ongoing road work, Caltrans runs convoys twice daily at 7:00 am and 5:00 pm. You have to enter one of those convoys to get into or out of the Big Sur stretch where Esalen sits. Plan accordingly.
Workshop Guests
If you book a workshop or an overnight stay, the bath hours are different and more generous. Call Esalen directly for those details.

A heads-up: Some recent chatter online suggests the 1:00 am – 3:00 am public access might have changed or tightened up. Definitely call before you drive all the way there.
