Bonny Doon Beach
Bonny Doon is a well-established, “tradition-based” clothing-optional beach. While technically part of Coast Dairies State Park, nude sunbathing is generally tolerated at the northern end, though it remains legally “at your own risk.”
The Nude Section
-
Location: The CO area is located at the north end of the beach.
-
Landmark: Walk north (right when facing the ocean) past the large, flat-topped rock formation. This serves as the informal boundary between the “textile” (clothed) area near the entrance and the nude section.
-
Legal Status: Nudity is not officially sanctioned by California State Parks. Rangers can issue citations for “indecent exposure,” though enforcement usually focuses on lewd behavior or complaints rather than simple sunbathing.
Logistics & Access
-
Coordinates: Intersection of Highway 1 and Bonny Doon Road (approx. 11 miles north of Santa Cruz).
-
The Crossing: After parking, you must cross the railroad tracks and descend a steep, sandy trail.
-
The Creek: Liddell Creek often bisects the beach. Depending on the season, you will need to wade through water or balance across logs to reach the CO section. Do not attempt to use the man-made tunnel for transit; it is for drainage and can be hazardous.
-
Facilities: Zero. There are no toilets, water, or trash cans. Pack out everything you bring in.
Safety & Security (Critical)
-
Vehicle Break-ins: This lot is a high-target zone for “smash-and-grabs.” Leave nothing visible in your car—not even a towel or charging cable.
-
Surf Hazards: This is not a swimming beach. The shelf drops off sharply, and rip currents are powerful. There are no lifeguards.
-
Cliff Stability: The bluffs are composed of eroding mudstone/sandstone. Do not set up your spot directly under the cliffs, as rockfalls are common.
Etiquette & Regulations
-
Photography: Strictly frowned upon in the north end. Keep cameras and phones stowed to respect the privacy of others.
-
Social Conduct: Bonny Doon is a family-friendly clothing-optional beach. Overtly sexual behavior is not tolerated by the community and will result in immediate ranger intervention if spotted.
-
Prohibited Items:
-
No Dogs: Strictly enforced to protect local snowy plover habitats.
-
No Glass/Alcohol/Fire: Standard state park rules apply; rangers patrol the bluffs frequently.
-
Best Conditions
-
Wind: The beach is “cupped” by cliffs, providing better wind protection than nearby Waddell Creek, but it can still get gusty by 2:00 PM.
-
Timing: Late September and October offer the best “Indian Summer” weather with minimal fog.
